The Sheriff is an elected official and the chief law enforcement officer of the county. An important duty is to provide law enforcement services to the unincorporated areas of the county; however, he maintains law enforcement jurisdiction in all cities and townships within the county.
The Sheriff is responsible for the protection of life and property. Enforcement includes criminal investigations, security of courtrooms, service of civil processes of the courts and responsible for the operation and maintenance of the county jail. Each of these services must be provided seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The duties of the Sheriff are set forth in North Carolina Law.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office consists of more than one hundred fifty personnel, divided between the Operations Bureau and the Detention Bureau.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office is located in the Law Enforcement Center on NC Highway 65 in Wentworth, NC. The Administrative/Operations Bureau is responsible for the law enforcement functions of the Department and the School Resource Officers Program. Sworn officers with the Sheriff’s Office have jurisdiction anywhere within the County. The Field Operations Unit provides 24-hour patrol protection to citizens of the County. The Criminal Investigation Section handles all follow-ups on crimes and the prosecution of suspects through the court system. Deputies in the Legal Process Division are charged with the service of both criminal and civil process throughout the County.
 Chief Deputy Major Abner Bullins performs administrative and supervisory work assisting the Sheriff in the management of all Sheriff’s Office operations. Major Bullins acts as the first line assistant to the Sheriff in the command and supervision of all Sheriff’s Office personnel. It is his responsibility for the operation of the Sheriff’s Office in the absence of the Sheriff.
